How it Started…

It all began with an idea. My idea was that I wanted to teach my kids myself. As a past school teacher, I felt confident that I could get the job done. And my husband was on board, so what were we waiting for?!

We had several reasons for wanting to allow our kids to learn at home. While there are strong political opinions and public-school-bashers out there in the homeschool community (and those are certainly factors), our reasons are a bit closer to home.

  • Two of my kids are neurodivergent; i.e. a life of IEPs and/or 504s.

  • In a rural setting, there are limited choices for public or private schools.

  • Kids deserve to have some say in what they are learning. I want to foster those natural interests and proclivities and create life long learners, not just fact regurgitators.

  • I like love the freedom to teach what I want, when I want and how I want!

  • While I still strive to ensure their curriculum is rigorous and will hold up to any public school standards, we can go at a pace that allows them to flourish, regardless of age. There will be no moving on until a concept has been grasped well.

  • Learning is about so much more than teaching kids how to take tests!

I could probably go on and on with my reasons for why we do this. And some days, those hard days, those reasons are all that keep this mama going. At the end of the day though, I wouldn’t choose anything else.

Until next time…
